The American Legion, founded in 1919 by World War I veterans, has played a significant role in American society by advocating for veterans' rights, promoting patriotism, and providing community services. Over the past century, the Legion has established itself as a cornerstone of veteran support and advocacy. However, in the last two decades, the organization has faced significant challenges due to its reliance on traditional funding models and an aging membership base. This essay explores the history of the American Legion, its impact over the past two decades, and the potential for a transitional model that embraces new technologies and younger leadership to sustain its mission.
The American Legion was established in Paris on March 15-17, 1919, by a group of American Expeditionary Forces officers. The founding principles focused on patriotism, mutual helpfulness, and service to veterans. The organization's early years were marked by significant achievements, including the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau and the drafting of the first comprehensive federal veterans' benefits legislation.
Throughout the 20th century, the American Legion became a formidable advocate for veterans, influencing policy and establishing programs to support veterans' health, education, and employment. Its impact was particularly notable in the post-World War II era, where it played a crucial role in the passage of the GI Bill, which provided educational and housing benefits to returning soldiers (Campbell, 2009).
The Legion's commitment to "100% Americanism" also saw it actively participate in various social and political movements, including anti-communism during the Cold War and advocacy for patriotic education (Lewis, 2023). This involvement extended to controversial actions, such as the Legion's opposition to progressive educators and its role in immigration debates (Riley & Stern, 2004).
In recent years, the American Legion has encountered several challenges that have threatened its sustainability. The organization has traditionally relied on membership dues and revenues from food and beverage sales, pull tabs, ad hoc gaming, and local fundraising activities held at its brick-and-mortar posts. These revenue streams have been increasingly strained due to an aging membership and changing social dynamics.
Aging Membership: The core membership of the American Legion primarily consists of older veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. As these members age, the organization faces a decline in active participants and volunteers, which impacts local posts' ability to maintain operations and host events.
Decline in Traditional Revenues: The traditional revenue models, such as food and beverage sales at posts and pull tab gaming, have become less reliable. Changes in social habits, increased competition from other entertainment venues, and the COVID-19 pandemic have further exacerbated these issues, leading to reduced income for many posts.
Inability to Attract Younger Veterans: One of the most significant challenges has been the difficulty in attracting younger veterans from more recent conflicts, such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan. Younger veterans often have different expectations and lifestyles, making the traditional model less appealing to them.
To address these challenges, the American Legion must innovate and adapt by embracing new technologies, engaging younger veterans, and exploring alternative revenue streams. One promising initiative is the creation of the first virtual American Legion post, Blue Sky Post 426 (www.BlueSkyPost426.com), which serves as a pilot project for this transitional model.
Embracing Technology and Social Media: Leveraging technology can help streamline membership enrollment and enhance communication with both current and prospective members. Social media platforms can be used to promote the Legion's activities, share veterans' stories, and create a sense of community among younger veterans.
Online Marketplace Integration: Developing an online marketplace for merchandise and services can provide a new revenue stream that is not dependent on physical locations. This marketplace can include Legion-branded merchandise, educational resources, and virtual event tickets.
Engaging Younger Veterans: Attracting younger veterans requires understanding their needs and interests. Offering programs that focus on professional development, mental health support, and family-friendly activities can make the Legion more relevant to this demographic. Additionally, involving younger veterans in leadership roles can help ensure that the organization remains dynamic and forward-thinking.
Alternative Funding Models: Exploring alternative funding models, such as grants, partnerships with businesses, and crowdfunding, can provide financial stability. The Legion can also benefit from corporate sponsorships and collaborations with other veteran organizations.
Blue Sky Post 426 represents an innovative approach to addressing the challenges faced by the American Legion. This virtual post leverages technology to create a flexible and accessible platform for veterans. It offers online meetings, virtual events, and a digital marketplace, making it easier for veterans to participate regardless of their location or schedule.
The virtual post also serves as a testbed for new ideas and initiatives that can be scaled across the organization. By analyzing the success of Blue Sky Post 426, the American Legion can develop best practices and strategies for other posts to implement, ensuring a more resilient and adaptable organization.
The American Legion has a rich history of supporting veterans and promoting patriotism. However, the organization faces significant challenges in the modern era due to its reliance on traditional revenue models and an aging membership base. The creation of Blue Sky Post 426 is a promising step towards this future, providing a model for how the Legion can adapt and thrive in the digital age.
The American Legion and Cannabis: A Catalyst for Change
The American Legion, a long-standing veterans' organization, might seem an unlikely champion for cannabis. However, American Legion Post 426 (Blue Sky Lakeside Post) (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7191582189031989248/) is making waves as the nation's only virtual pro-cannabis Legion post. This short narrative explores the potential impact this progressive stance could have on the future of the cannabis industry, particularly as medical research and acceptance continue to grow.
Traditionally, the American Legion hasn't embraced cannabis. However, Post 426 recognizes the mounting evidence for the medical benefits of cannabis, especially for veterans suffering from PTSD and chronic pain. A recent YouTube video [Roundtable #72 Veterans Cannabis Research: Anton Harb Jr. & Eryck Stamper American Legion Post 426] highlights this very issue, featuring veterans sharing their experiences and the Post's perspective on cannabis research.
The potential impact of Post 426's advocacy is significant. The American Legion boasts a vast network of veterans and supporters. If Post 426's pro-cannabis stance gains traction within the Legion, it could significantly shift the organization's position and influence federal cannabis policy.
Several factors bolster this potential impact.

The American Legion Blue Sky Post 426 is based in Montana and operates as the Legion's first-of-its kind virtual post. We have members from across the country . The benefit of having a virtual post is that veterans can attend our meetings and join the conversation from anywhere in the world at any time. They don't have to get in a car and drive to their local lodge to participate in our meetings. This saves time, is more sustainable, and allows us to access a wide variety of service members to include some who may be unable to leave their homes or participate otherwise.
Our post has been in existence since January 2023. It was started by a generous donation and the kindness of Dr. Sue Sisley, MD to allow us to use her address and location for mail and any necessary in-person meetings. Dr. Sue Sisley, MD should be considered the patron saint of any veteran suffering from PTSD and chronic pain. She has been working tirelessly for over a decade to research alternative therapies for veterans to address many of the issues veterans suffer from their service to the nation.
The focus of our post is to educate and encourage the Veterans Administration and the Dept. of Defense to research and provide access to plant-based medicines for veterans. We focus mainly on psychedelics and cannabis medicines and our membership includes some of the most renowned doctors, researchers, practitioners and patients in the world. Noting that it is always the family who suffers the most when 'their veteran' is experiencing PTSD and chronic pain from the trauma they have endured in uniform, we are also opening up a Family Auxiliary.
In one short year, we have managed to get national approval for a resolution that was adopted at the American Legion national agenda to encourage the VA to research psychedelics for PTSD...and it has worked as this research is under way. We are now driving the VA to use Opioid Relief funds to support increased research into psychedelics and cannabis.
Post 426's virtual nature breaks down geographical barriers faced by traditional posts. Veterans who may not have a local Legion or have moved away from their original post can now connect to a welcoming and progressive community from anywhere in the world. This opens up a vast, untapped pool of potential members, especially among younger veterans who are increasingly tech-savvy.
